Shriram Kaluke – Ensuring Clean and Safe Water for Pune

Belonging to a agricultural family of rural Maharashtra and had bare minimum of education has come up a long way in his life. He owns a service company, which provides services for cleaning of water tanks in residential complexes and industrial establishment in and around Pune city.  His present turnover is Rs.6 lakhs and provides employment to 8 people.

Shriram Kaluke hails from poor farming family of rural Maharashtra. He is the eldest four siblings. His parents provided the best possible education to him. Since he is the eldest one the responsibility of taking care of his family fell upon of him. After his school education he headed for Pune, a nearby big city, to earn money. He began doing odd jobs in a construction company. However due to slum in construction business, the company shut down.  He went back to his village only to complete ITI in mason trade. He again came to Pune to find a suitable job. He joined a construction company as a supervisor. Again due to global recession, the construction company which he was working closed down its business. As the necessity is mother invention, he found water tank cleaning a good business. He began using manual labour to clean the tanks, after loan amount from BYST in 2007 he purchased imported equipment to clean the tanks. 
Though Shriram started the business enthusiastically, he found himself facing many problems almost from the very beginning. As he was new to the business and had only a few clients, he did not have sufficient cash flow to pay his workers. He also faced marketing issues as he did not have funds for marketing and had to rely on word-of-mouth publicity

Shriram’s use of an imported machine has been a key factor in his success, as it consumes less electricity and cleans better than domestic machines, and he has since bought three more.

His turnover in 2007-08 was Rs. 3 lakhs. In 2008-09 and 2009 and 2010 his business registered a turnover of Rs. 4.5 lakhs and Rs. 6 lakhs respectively.

Loan Repayment:
Mr. Kaluke never defaulted on his repayment. He completed his loan repayment without fail.  

Mr. Kaluke provides employment opportunities to over 8 people. Most of these workers are from his village. He provides them training program on how to handle the sophisticated equipment, how to maintain good relations with customers, how personal cleanliness importance to business.

He provides goggles, gum boots, helmets and safety ropes to his workers. He also declares festival bonus once in a year to his workers.


Mr. Kaluke knows how difficult it is for person from rural community to struggle in urban areas. He employs his villagers in company. He even supports and nurtures them to become entrepreneurs.

Awards won: He won Citi Micro Entrepreneur Award for 2009 under Social Responsibility Category.

Mr. S. M. Khan, Proprietor, Exacta Enterprises is his mentor. Being a businessman, Mr. Khan knows ups and downs in the business. Mr. Khan provided moral support to Mr. Kaluke when he needed it most. Mr. Kaluke owes his success to his mentor.
He wants to make his company as a reliable company in Pune. He is planning to expand his company services to across Maharashtra.
